Stern Perspectives

Through SCC, I consulted with Groundwork, a non-profit organization that focuses on youth empowerment in inner-city Brooklyn. My project was to work with the senior leadership of the organization to develop a strategic plan for recruiting and retaining talented professionals.

This project was exciting on two levels. First, I could make a tangible impact in the social sector by applying the business principles I was learning in the classrom. Second, I could leverage my project experience to build the foundation for my intended career switch into the field of human capital.

Throughout recruiting season, I continually drew upon my experiences at Groundwork to demonstrate my commitment to talend management and understanding of strategic planning. The lessons I learned at Groundwork helped me showcase these new skill sets, and as a result, I successfully secured a summer internship in this area at my top-choice firm.

For me, SCC provided a great professional stepping stone and a meaningful opportunity to give back to the New York community. It has undoubtedly been a major highlight of my Stern experience.

The use of my business skills for social good is extremely important to me, so I was thrilled to participate in the SCC. My assignment stretched me out of my marketing comfort zone to a challenging fiscal operations project at The Legal Aid Society. The project immediately helped me utilize the concepts and tactics I was learning in the classroom, and gave me a real-world opportunity to build my finance, modeling, and operations skills. Not only did I grow professionally, but I was able to make a significant impact on Legal Aid by providing them with tools and models for greater efficiency. SCC projects are hard work, but the rewards for both the student and NYC non-profts are entirely worth it.
