If you have any questions or concerns regarding Blackboard, the Stern Teaching Effectiveness Program (STEP), or technology training in one of the enhanced classrooms, please contact us at citl@stern.nyu.edu.

We have listed several issues below that may ease the transition into the new semester. Please click on the links below or scroll down to read descriptions of each:

Instructions for Adding TAs to Blackboard

You may be unaware, but as instructors you can control who gains access to your course site. For instance, if you wish to add a TA to your Blackboard course site, simply:

          ▪ Log into your course site (http://sternclasses.nyu.edu).

          ▪ Click on Control Panel.

          ▪ Click Add Users by Role.

          ▪ If you know your TA’s Blackboard log-in ID, type it in the field, select the role “Teaching Assistant,” and click Submit.

          ▪ If you don’t know your TA’s Blackboard log-in ID, click Browse and search for the name (case sensitive). When you locate your TA, click Submit. The user name should appear in the User(s) field, then select the role “Teaching Assistant” and click Submit again.

Students not receiving e-mails in Blackboard

Sometimes, when instructors send out e-mails through Blackboard, they are unsure whether their students receive them. Some useful tips:

As an instructor, you should receive a copy of the e-mail that you sent out to students which (depending on server traffic) can take up to an hour or two. In general, this will serve as confirmation that students received your e-mail. If you do not receive a copy in your in-box within a couple hours, please contact citl@stern.nyu.edu and let us know.

Sometimes, when sending out e-mail through Blackboard, instructors will receive a returned message as undeliverable. This may occur because a student has set his or her forwarding address to a commercial mailbox whose account is over the allotted limit. To fix, please instruct the student to clear their mailbox. If a student wishes to change his or her e-mail address to log into NYUHome (http://home.nyu.edu), they must click Preferences and change the e-mail address under “Mail forwarding.” This is the address that will show up in Blackboard.

Instructor Unable to Log In to Blackboard

Occasionally, an instructor may have trouble logging into Blackboard. This may happen for several reasons. Some things to note:

▪ Make sure the Caps lock on your keyboard is not activated (sounds obvious, but yes it happens!)

▪ Make sure you are using the same Stern log-in and password you use to check e-mail.

If you are a new faculty member, make sure you have visited HR in person to fill out your paperwork and get processed; otherwise, your Blackboard account will not have yet been created.

Communicating Blackboard Instructions to Students

Also, as part of the course creation process, in the upcoming weeks the CITL will include sample boilerplate text that can be used to communicate Blackboard instructions to students. This might be useful if you need to describe how to submit an assignment, change Blackboard e-mail addresses, or create a home page profile. This content is unavailable to students by default. To customize this content and make it available:

          ▪ Log into your course site (http://sternclasses.nyu.edu).

          ▪ Click on Control Panel.
          ▪ Click on Course Information.

          ▪ Follow the instructions in Course Information to copy the content to a content area.

Thank you for your time and we wish you a successful fall semester.
