Claudine Gartenberg joined New York University Stern School of Business as an Assistant Professor of Management in September 2011.
Professor Gartenberg's research focuses on the connection between strategy and the internal organization of firms. In one set of research, for which she has received the Wyss Award at Harvard Business School, she asks whether the corporate scope of firms can induce incentive conflicts inside organizations. Using the US residential mortgage markets as her research setting, she compares lending quality across firms competing in the same regions. One study investigates whether homebuilders excessively lowered lending standards to inflate homes sales during the recent housing boom. Another study examines how lending quality was affected by the combination of in-house securitization operations and firm governance. In a second set of research, Professor Gartenberg investigates how competitive or cooperative incentive compensation of senior managers relates to firm strategy and internal and external labor market practices.
Prior to joining NYU Stern, Professor Gartenberg was an account manager at a business consulting firm, working with clients such as PG&E, Chevron, Hallmark Cards, Wells Fargo and Bank of America.
Professor Gartenberg received a B.A. with honors in Physics from Harvard College, and a D.B.A. and M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, where she graduated as a Baker Scholar.
