What are my options to travel to New York?
New York City is served by three major airports: (New York) Laguardia and JFK and (New Jersey) Newark Liberty. If you travel by rail, you will arrive either at Grand Central Station or Penn Station, both in the heart of Manhattan. Once you get here, you want to learn about the Subway and Bus system, the easiest and cheapest ways to get around town. (More information at the bottom of this page)
By Air: Laguardia Airport is located just outside of Manhattan. Travel from Laguardia to Manhattan is best by going outside your terminal and getting in the line for a yellow cab. Don’t accept the offers you will receive from independent cab drivers inside the terminals. It won’t cost less, and it can cost much, much more. The cab fare into Manhattan from Laguardia is about $25 plus $4.50 if you take a toll bridge or tunnel plus tip (around $5 is the norm), (plus 50 cents off peak surcharge if you travel at night). It will take you about 30 minutes to get into town, depending of course, on the time of day. There are also Manhattan bound buses and an airport shuttle available for less than a cab.
JFK Airport is somewhat farther from Manhattan, but the trip in is no more difficult. The fare is a flat $45 to any destination in Manhattan in a yellow cab from JFK. It could take 45 minutes or so. You can also get to Manhattan by rail from JFK. The AirTrain right outside your terminal will take you to Jamaica Station – be sure to take the outer loop, to Jamaica. At Jamaica, you will change to a Long Island Railroad train into New York Penn Station. Total fare will be about $18 for the train.
Newark Liberty Airport is in New Jersey. That means the cab fare to Manhattan is more than $60. If you prefer to take the train, it’s also simple. Newark airport has a rail link that serves the terminals, then takes you to the New Jersey Transit train station. There you will pick up a New Jersey Transit train to New York. Total cost about $10. The Jersey Transit trains go to Penn Station in Manhattan. NOTE: Jersey Transit trains also stop at Newark Penn Station. You don’t want this station. Stay on the train. You want New York Penn Station – the second Penn Station stop.
By Rail: You can take Jersey Transit, Metro North and Amtrak trains from points in the Eastern U.S. Jersey Transit and AmTrak trains arrive at Penn Station. Metro North goes to Grand Central. Once you arrive at either of these stations, you are in the heart of Manhattan. You can immediately head up to the surface to walk or take a cab to your next destination, or you can pick up a subway train – both train stations connect to multiple subway lines.
How should I travel to my hotel when I arrive in New York?
A yellow cab is the best way to travel in New York. From the airport or train station just give the name of your hotel. The CQ Downtown is on William Street between Wall St and Pine.
How should I get from my hotel to the conference site?
Take the subway or a taxi. The map (scroll to the end of this page) shows where the conference site is and where the trains stop. All are just a few blocks from Stern. From downtown (Club Quarters) you want to take the A or C train from the Broadway-Nassau Street station to the West 4th Station which is 4 blocks from Stern. From Times Square, take any of the trains listed.
Where is the closest parking garage?
Washington Square Village Garage, 1 Washington Square Village, between 3rd St. and Bleecker St.
