Why an Innovation & Entrepreneurship LabCollectively, NYU students, alumni and faculty generate hundreds of great ideas (new products, internet business solutions, software products, medical devices, business models, advanced algorithms, chemical processes, research products, etc.) and have the capacity to generate even more. However, most ideas don't generate profits because the creators don't know how to refine ideas, turn ideas into assets and bring ideas to market.
The Innovation & Entrepreneurship LabThe I&E Lab is a seminar series designed to train you how to systematically and repeatedly create commercially-viable innovations, yielding a large and diverse portfolio of novel products, services and business models for sale and licensing to industry.
Lab participants must be willing and able to devote on average an additional 4-8 hours per week outside of class on assignments and projects in order to benefit from the program.
To apply for the fall lab, please click here or e-mail Cynthia Franklin, cfrankli@stern.nyu.edu for more information.
NYU students, faculty and alumni in a variety of disciplines will collaborate to work on new products, services and business models generated among the group. The Lab will train participants to refine their innovations (and the innovations of others) using methodical processes. Participants will build a portfolio of patents and other intangible assets to protect their innovations, and then license and sell those assets to industry. Over time, participants will repeatedly develop new innovations and become 'prolific inventors'. Lab participants must be willing and able to devote on average an additional 4-8 hours per week outside of class on assignments and projects in order to benefit from the program.
While this Lab will focus on team inventing and contributing ideas to improve group inventions, you can also elect to work alone. In this 11-week series, you’ll learn:
- How to create and refine your “big idea” into a commercially-viable innovation.
- How to build a portfolio of patents and other intangible assets to protect your innovations.
- How to license and sell those assets to industry.
- How to bring your “big idea” to market using non-traditional but powerful ways.

In addition, Lab members may become responsible for managing the development and commercialization of entire portfolios of innovations. A technology background is not required. Alumni, students, and faculty from all all backgrounds are welcome to participate, e.g., business, law, computer science, mathematics, medicine and dentistry, chemistry, computational biology, telecommunications, etc. The Innovation & Entrepreneurship Lab will be held Tuesdays, October 6 to December 15, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at NYU Stern. Lab participants must be willing and able to spend 4-8 hours per week outside of class on assignments in order to benefit from the program. Dean Alderucci is an adjunct professor at NYU Stern School of Business and the chief operation officer and assistant general counsel of Cantor Fitzgerald's Global Innovation Division.
