MEA Welcomes Miramax COO

Rick Sands, Chief Operating Officer of Miramax Films, was the special guest speaker at an April 8 event hosted by the Media and Entertainment Association (MEA), an MBA student organization, and the Stern Alumni in Entertainment, Media and Technology (EMT) Committee.

Speaking to an audience of nearly 150 guests that included Stern alumni, MBA students and faculty members, Mr. Sands commented on a variety of industry issues, from foreign presales to theatrical distribution to TV and DVD. He also commented on Miramax's recent success at the Academy Awards and the elements involved in creating successful films.

As Miramax COO, Mr. Sands is responsible for all business, operational and financial aspects of the company, including day to day responsibility for marketing, publicity and distribution throughout all media, including theatrical, Home Video and television. In addition, he maintains and develops talent relationships, as well as co-productions and acquisitions.

Martin Herbst, MBA '01 and Chair of the Stern Alumni in EMT Committee, presented introductory remarks. "Stern Alumni in EMT is thrilled to cooperate with the MEA to feature notable industry speakers and create valuable networking opportunities for our alumni," said Mr. Herbst. "This event has provided Stern alumni with yet another chance to learn more about current EMT issues from an industry leader and make connections with a diverse group of fellow graduates."

Jake Hindelong, President of the MEA, also presented introductory comments. "The MEA works hand-in-hand with the Entertainment, Media and Technology initiative to build industry relationships in New York City and around the world," explained Mr. Hindelong. "In the past year, the MEA has welcomed a number of distinguished speakers to campus, providing students with unique opportunities to make industry contacts."
