Alumni
Corner "Now,
this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is,
perhaps, the end of the beginning." Greetings Fellow Alumnus/a: Over the past six months I have had the great fortune to chair the MBA Class of 1993 Reunion Committee. This role has afforded me the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and colleagues and open a dialogue with new ones. I have been able to hear about the triumphs, challenges, promotions, lateral moves and career changes of many of our former classmates (those who were still reachable by keeping their information current in SWAP, the online alumni directory). We are quite an accomplished group. Some of us have set up our own companies; some of us are running small companies and major divisions of large companies; and importantly, many of us are raising the next generation of business leaders. And ten years out of Stern, our distinguished pasts portend an even brighter, more distinguished future. Kudos to us. Columbia, step aside. Wharton, move over. Harvard, get out of the way. Stern is coming through! Amidst my excitement for our future prospects as individuals, I must, however, sound a word of caution. The Stern network is only as good as the commitment of each alumnus/a to be a part of it. As I see it, members of the Stern MBA Class of '93 - and fellow alumni from other classes - face and will face a number of professional challenges now and in the future. Who you know and what you know - in terms of finding the intellectual and monetary capital to consummate deals - will be key to meeting these challenges. One obvious approach to overcoming these: maximize the potential of the alumni network, comprised of more than 60,000 alumni worldwide. How many fellow alumni in this prestigious network are you connected with? Why so few? How can each of us become active participants in this community and best use this resource? As the opening quotation implies, I am hopeful that for my class, the Reunion will be a first step on the road to improving the cohesiveness and hence, effectiveness, of our community- instead of being and end unto itself. Ongoing participation in events and programs are the necessary steps to enable us to build a stronger, well organized network to ensure a brighter, more fulfilling future for ourselves and our children. Tap the network, it pays. Best regards, Robert L. Hillman
