EMT Panel
Examines Cable Industry

Nearly 100 alumni and guests gathered in the Commons on March 18 to attend a panel discussion on "How are Technologies Reshaping the Television Business?" hosted by the Stern Alumni in Entertainment, Media and Technology (EMT) Committee in conjunction with the Office of Alumni Affairs.

The discussion covered a variety of topics, including network strategies for responding to consumers' adoption of new technologies such as broadband, video-on-demand (VOD) and personalized cable channel lineup. Discussants also addressed niche programming, interactive television, advertising models and interactive advertising. In addition, the panelists addressed revenue sharing and cost allocation among cablers, programmers, advertisers and consumers. Audience members had the opportunity to submit questions in advance to facilitate a more focused question and answer session.

Panelists included Dr. Steven J. Fredericks, MBA '79 and President and Chief Executive Officer of CMR/TNS Media Intelligence; Matthew Strauss, BS '93 and Executive Vice President and General Manager at Mag Rack; and Bob Watson, Vice President of Programming and New Business Development at Time Warner Cable of NY. Paul Jelinek, MBA '95 and Vice President of New Media Business Development at Nickelodeon, served as moderator.

A networking reception followed the panel discussion, providing attendees with the opportunity to mingle with fellow industry representatives.

Stern Alumni in EMT
The Stern Alumni in EMT Committee was formed in 2001 to maximize the extensive networking, informational and professional opportunities available to alumni working in these industries. Chaired by Martin Herbst, MBA '01, the Committee seeks to create a forum for Stern alumni to stay connected with fellow alumni, key industry players and evolving trends in the EMT industries. To this end, the Committee organizes happy hours, networking events and panel discussions such as the March 18 event. For more information about the Committee, contact Martin Herbst at MHerbst.MBA01@alumni.stern.nyu.edu.
