NYU Stern Team Advanced to Finals
in L'Oréal Competition

Three MBA student teams from NYU Stern succeeded in advancing to the final round of the L'Oréal e-Strat Challenge, an online global business competition. The competition allows students to apply the theories they are learning in the classroom to real world business situations by putting to the test their managerial, decision-making, strategic thinking and leadership skills.

In the competition, teams use those skills in direct competition against four virtual cosmetic companies, with the ultimate goal of achieving the highest Stock Price Index. The competition is played out in real time with teams from around the world during six rounds of competition over the course of a two-month period.

The highest ranked NYU Stern team was Team Sino, including Min Shen, Z. Lisa Tsai and Man-Yee Mary Wong. Team Sino finished the competition as the highest-ranking team in North America, placing them in the competition's final round. Team Sino joined winning teams from each of the seven geographic zones to present their strategy to a panel of judges at L'Oréal's Paris headquarters in April.

Other leading international business schools participating in the competition included the University of California at Berkeley Haas School of Business, Harvard Business School, The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, the London School of Economics and INSEAD in France. The Stern School won the e-Strat global competition in 2001.

NYU Stern teams that competed in e-Strat include:

Belletoile: Adriana Viejo, Sarah Dim and Isabelle Maurandy
Bluecore: Richard Lorenzo, Sherveen Lotfi and Brendan Troy
Shamrock Team: Eric Updegraff, Anju Dharia and Kunal Chokshi
SternStrat: Daniel Seewald, Artez Dalgin and Nirva Dalgin
TDA Sophisticate: Theresa Kerr, Damian Benders and Aria Anderson
TGIF: Hussein Sefian, Fernando Rodriguez and Danica Cheung

"NYU Stern was pleased enter into this partnership for a third year with L'Oréal in this simulation," stated Thomas F. Cooley, Dean of NYU Stern. "The L'Oréal e-Strat Challenge is a great opportunity for our MBA students to apply their business knowledge to real world business issues and to be exposed in a special way to an international leader in cosmetics."

"The Challenge allows students to look inside the cosmetics industry and provides L'Oréal with a unique international recruiting tool," said Jenna Sheldon, Director of Human Resources and Coordinator of e-Strat programs at L'Oréal. "Participants bring their knowledge, leadership ability and decision making skills to The Challenge, which are critical attributes to the success of any international company, including L'Oréal."
