Connections
Alumni Mentoring Program

Sponsored by the Undergraduate College Advising Department, the Connections alumni mentoring program enables undergraduate alumni to share career information and provide guidance to undergraduate mentees as they prepare to graduate from Stern. It also offers alumni with the chance to network with fellow alumni mentors. In addition, it gives alumni the opportunity to give back to the School by assisting students with the transition from college to the business world.

Connections offers three ways to get involved: work one-to-one with a current student to assist them through the job or internship search; be a part of the Connections database to serve as a resource for current students to contact for career advice; or serve as a speaker on career experience, industry knowledge or job searching skills. Alumni are paired with students based on common interests.

Recent graduates of the Undergraduate College are encouraged to become Connections mentors. Alumni who are in a more advanced stage of their career are invited to share their experiences by participating in various events held throughout the year in conjunction with the Connections program or by becoming a part of the Connections database from which students contact you via e-mail or phone for one-time career advice.

The Undergraduate Advising Office plans a number of events throughout the year to bring together mentors and mentees, which may include group dinners and receptions, career workshops, and mentor panels and presentations. Mentors and mentees also plan one to two informal meetings per year.

"The Connections Program was one of the most valuable activities I have participated in at Stern," said Craig Guttenplan, undergraduate student. "It gave me the opportunity to speak to numerous professionals in the field and learn some tricks of the trade. I learned what my day-to-day functions will be, what to expect from co-workers, how to go about finding jobs and how to interview successfully for a position. This program has added a new dimension in preparing for my career. The mentors I have been paired with have inspired me to become a mentor when I graduate from Stern."

Connections is made possible through the generous support of Jerry Cohen, BS '53/MBA '59 and Member of NYU Stern Board of Overseers, and his wife, Adrianne. The program was launched in fall 2000 and continues to grow.
