Alumni Weekend Programs NYU
Stern hosted two educational opportunities for Stern graduates over
Alumni Weekend on April 3-6, 2003. Alumni attended a Career Education
Presentation led by a career consultant from Lee Hecht Harrison, available
through a partnership with ExecuPlanet. In addition, alumni participated
in an Operations Management Simulation class taught by Eitan Zemel,
W. Edwards Deming Professor of Quality and Productivity, and Chair of
the Information, Operations and Management Sciences Department. The
programming provided Stern Alumni Weekend participants with the opportunity
to network while learning new skills. The
Career Resource Presentation, entitled "Networking: The Art of
Finding a Job," focused on practical skills for effective networking.
Shari Neufeld, Senior Career Consultant and Corporate Trainer at Lee
Hecht Harrison, shared her expertise on a variety of topics, including:
the network you have and how you can develop it, the right way to approach
your network for assistance, utilizing the CareerTools Stern alumni
career site, how to develop networking scripts, and more. Following
the presentation, alumni put their new networking skills to work at
a reception hosted by Frederick D.S. Choi, Vice Dean and Dean of the
Undergraduate College. A group
of graduates of the MBA program participated in an Operations Management
Simulation class taught by Professor Eitan Zemel. Participants were
asked to read and prepare a case on the way that a company manages its
purchasing process and interacts with its suppliers. The workshop examined
the connection between process selection and business performance, and
examined the critical role that processes play in identifying and developing
the required set of operations capabilities for a chosen strategy. The
group developed alternative processes to achieve a specific task and
examined the impact of implementing simple changes. Finally, participants
examined ways in which they could implement the ideas in their own work
environment. "I really enjoyed participating in Professor Zemel's class," said Olivier Néant, MBA '02. "I was able to learn valuable operations skills through the assembly line simulation that will help me in my current position at Société Générale when analyzing businesses, strategy and a client's operational constraints. Meeting fellow graduates added a new dimension to the exercise and strengthened the feeling of a strong Stern alumni community. I hope that this type of activity can be repeated and extended to other departments in the near future." Alumni Weekend featured a series of special events, including the NYU Alumni Association Annual Awards Dinner; an opportunity to meet NYU President John Sexton and hear his vision for the future of the University; and a Gala Alumni Dinner Dance. Mark your calendars for the second NYU Alumni Weekend on April 16-18, 2004. Visit the Alumni Weekend website for more details>>
