An Update from Stern Alumni in
Washington, D.C.

Following is an update from the Stern Alumni in Washington, D.C., Regional Group by Seth Balsam, MBA '97 and Regional Group Chair. Seth provides an overview of the group's recent activities and a preview of upcoming events.

Dear Fellow Alumni:

A brief introduction for those of you not yet familiar with SternDC: a group of determined alumni managed to start an alumni organization from scratch, right here in our own back yard. Our goal is to build an active and cohesive network of Stern alumni (both graduate and undergraduate) here in the Washington, D.C., region and have as much fun as possible while doing it.

We've had three events over the past few months:

  • Our first networking event, held in October at the Harbour Club in Georgetown, was an unqualified success with over fifty alumni attending.

  • January featured a double-header: a networking happy hour at Gordon Biersch and a Wizards game, both of which were well attended.

  • SternDC's February networking event at Gua Rapo in Arlington also drew a good alumni turnout.

This enthusiasm from D.C. area alumni has led us to start planning for other activities, such as a guest speaker series, behind-the-scenes tours of local institutions and companies, as well as joint events with other local alumni associations.

To aid informal networking and after-work unwinding, our monthly happy hour event rotates locations in D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

Mark your calendar for the next event on Thursday, March 20: a pre-tip off happy hour beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Caddies on Cordell (visit the website for directions). Then stay around to watch the first games of the NCAA tournament. Contact Tim Condon, MBA '02, at timothy_p_condon@hotmail.com to RSVP and for complete details.

That's not all. There is a "Hands on D.C." community service event scheduled on Saturday, April 5. Volunteer with your fellow Stern alumni for a day of painting, landscaping and cleaning a local D.C. public school. No special skills are required. Registration and the Kick-off Rally begin at 8:30 a.m. at Eastern Senior High School. The day wraps up at 3:00 p.m., and there will be a closing party at
Lulu’s Club Mardi Gras in the evening. Please let us know by Friday, March 21, if you will be able to join us. Friends and guests are welcome. To sign up, or if you have any further questions, please contact Jit Saha, MBA ’99, at jitster@hotmail.com.

Also, the SternDC Events Committee is hard at work coordinating a wine tasting for later this spring.

If we've managed to pique your interest, contact Jit Saha at the above e-mail address in order to have your name and contact information added to our mailing list.

Feel free to pass this along to any area alumni you might know, as our e-mail listings are not yet complete. Should you have any questions or suggestions, please reach out to me at the e-mail address below.

Warm regards,

Seth Balsam
