Alumni Support OCD Initiatives

The Office of Career Development (OCD) places special importance on the role that alumni play in the Stern community. OCD offers alumni a variety of ways to get involved, including participating as a Career Advisory Program (CAP) mentor, serving as a guest speaker on panels and at student conferences, identifying job opportunities at their companies and participating in networking events. In addition, many alumni serve as corporate recruiters, returning to Stern to interview and hire current MBAs for summer and full-time positions.

Career Advisory Program (CAP)
CAP is an advisory program designed to provide first-year, full-time MBA students and graduating MBA students with an opportunity to speak with Stern alumni in a wide range of industries about their careers. As a CAP mentor, an alumnus/a has the opportunity to share personal insights and offer advice on their particular industry and function. Alumni have been instrumental in offering students career advice and guidance. This support is invaluable in helping students to identify career goals and establish successful job search strategies.

Alumni Recruiters
Teams of corporate recruiters come to campus throughout the year to interview and hire NYU Stern MBA candidates for summer and full-time positions. Many of these recruiters are Stern alumni who work for large and small corporations in a wide variety of industries, including asset management, commercial banking, investment banking, pharmaceuticals, financial services, consumer products and consulting. Volunteering to participate in a corporate recruitment team offers alumni an opportunity to reconnect with the School and to support the Stern network by filling open positions with future fellow alumni.

Recruitment teams make themselves available at corporate presentations, dinners and receptions organized by their human resources departments.

The Office of Career Development surveyed a number of these on-campus recruiters to get their impression of the many changes that have taken place at Stern in recent years. Recruiters represented corporations including: Colgate-Palmolive, Goldman Sachs, Pfizer Inc., Salomon Smith Barney, UBS Warburg, and others. Following are excerpts from their observations:

What was your experience like as an alumnus/a returning to Stern to recruit?

  • It's always great to come back to campus (although the year I graduated the business school was still located on Trinity Place) and meet the students. It is obvious that the overall level of the students keeps increasing each year as well as their competencies.

  • The experience was really gratifying, coordination by OCD was outstanding and the quality of students was very good.

  • I think everyone did a wonderful job in making us feel comfortable. The packet containing resumes and forms helped in organizing for the interviews as well. Everything was so simple and painless.

  • It was great to be back on campus and to help give back to the School in the form of recruiting, especially during these difficult times.

What was your expectation of the students you met with?

  • I came to recruit for an investment bank and expected to meet smart, enthusiastic students and that was the case. The group of students that I interviewed was spectacular.

  • The students all had great experiences and credentials, and it was quite difficult to select candidates for interviews and second round interviews. The students who did well had done their homework on the culture of the company and were relaxed throughout the interview.

What has changed most at Stern since your time here as a student?

  • I think students are much more focused on career direction and the level of professionalism is much improved. They were all very well prepared and had good understanding of my company's culture, services and key success factors.

What are your thoughts on the new Office of Career Development facilities?

  • New Office of Career Development facilities: Top Rating

  • The level of services, help and quality (food and facilities) was excellent, surpassing that of schools like Kellogg. I was very impressed.
Our thanks to all of those alumni who participate in CAP or who serve as corporate recruiters. For additional information on ways to get involved, please contact the Office of Career Development at (212) 998-0623 or OCD@stern.nyu.edu.
