Undergraduate Students Compete in
Copenhagen Case Competition

Throughout the 2002-2003 academic year, Stern undergraduates have enthusiastically represented Stern at case competitions at corporations and academic institutions around the globe. It is not surprising that students welcome these opportunities as they often involve job prospects, travel and substantive prizes. Most important, they offer the chance to apply their Stern education to real-world problems and to build the Stern reputation worldwide. This month, a team of four Stern seniors - Sudipti Gupta, Neha Jikaria, Karen Narang and Nehal Valia - traveled to Copenhagen to compete in the Copenhagen Business School (CBS) Case Competition.

The aim of the CBS Case Competition is to create an opportunity for the best business undergraduate students to obtain a learning experience in terms of applying theoretical competencies as an instrument of real-life problem solving. Furthermore, the competition aims to encourage a dynamic cross-cultural networking environment in which students as well as faculty can exchange experiences.

The Organizing Committee of CBS Case Competition annually selects a number of schools to be invited based on previous merits, international reputation, experience in case solving and/or case based teaching. NYU Stern was one of three U.S. competitors, including the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and the Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California. Additional competitors representing universities from nine countries included: Copenhagen Business School, Copenhagen, Demark; Norweigan School of Management, Oslo, Norway; McGill University, Montréal, Canada; Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan; Singapore Management University, Singapore; Thammasat University, Bangkok, Thailand, University of Cape Town, South Africa; University of Economic Sciences, Budapest, Hungary; and WHU Koblenz, Otto Beisheim School of Management, Germany. The competition spanned an entire week including three days of research, analysis and preparation and one day of presentations.

By the end of the academic year, in addition to the Copenhagen Case Competition, students will have competed in the Carrot Capital Business Plan Competition, Loréal Marketing Award, Marshall School International Case Competition, Merrill Lynch Case Competition and New York Fed Challenge. Although the structure and content varies, each competition requires analytic skills, teamwork and excellent presentation skills.

Stern's success at these competitions has been impressive. In 2002, Stern captured first place prizes at both the Merrill Lynch Case Competition and the New York Fed Challenge.
