MBA/MFA (Tisch School of the Arts)
Bridging the gap between the “creatives” and the “suits," in May 2007 New York University announced a new dual degree graduate program that gives aspiring film producers the knowledge to navigate the fast-changing landscape of financing and filmmaking today. The MBA/MFA dual degree is a partnership between NYU’s Stern School of Business and Kanbar Institute of Film & Television at the Tisch School of the Arts, both highly regarded in their fields.
The MBA/MFA dual degree is a three-year program that enables students to pursue both degrees simultaneously. Designed to be the most comprehensive of its kind, using the top faculty and resources of each school, the dual degree program will produce highly employable individuals sought by major film studios, independent production companies and major television studios and networks.
Admission to the MBA/MFA program
To apply for the MBA/MFA dual degree, candidates must complete a separate application for each program. No additional admissions standards are applied to applications at either school. The student qualifies for the MBA/MFA program upon admission to both schools. Students applying for the dual degree program must meet the second round Stern deadline of January 15 and the Kanbar deadline of December 1. For questions about admission to Stern email sternmba@stern.nyu.edu, and for questions about admission to Kanbar email tisch.gradadmissions@nyu.edu.
Interested first-year NYU Stern MBA students will be considered for admission to the MBA/MFA dual degree program on a space available basis. Space availability depends on the number of admitted students from the year prior who choose to enroll and remain in the MBA/MFA dual degree program. Interested first-year MBA students will be required to submit a complete application to Kanbar by the application deadline of December 1.
Individuals who already hold one of the individual degrees are not eligible for admission to the dual degree program.
Academic Requirements
The program will take three years to complete, including two summers. Students will spend the first year at Stern, the second year at Kanbar and the third year will be split between the two schools. Both summers will be spent completing degree requirements at Kanbar. To view a sample schedule, visit the Academic Advising website.
Course Registration
Kanbar registration is handled through the NYU University Registrar, while the NYU Stern Office of Records & Registration handles registration for Stern students. Students will always register through the school at which they are taking the majority of their courses.
Tuition & Financial Aid
Students will pay the flat semester tuition rate of the program in which they are currently enrolled each year. In the third year, students will pay the flat semester tuition rate of the program through which they registered for classes. All applicants admitted to Stern are considered for merit-based scholarships. Scholarships to the Kanbar Institute are awarded on a competitive basis and may reflect academic merit as well as demonstrated financial need. Career Services
Students pursuing careers in the entertainment sector take responsibility for a primarily self-directed career search, as media and entertainment firms have not traditionally recruited on-campus at business schools. However, students will have access to resources at both Stern and the Tisch School for the Arts in order to augment their search.
In their first year at Stern, students will have access to our Career Development Program, which is required before participating in on-campus recruiting. In the second year, they will have access to career counseling and online tools at Stern. In their third year, students can participate in the on-campus recruiting program at Stern. Students will have access to the Stern alumni base and Stern-specific job postings soon after beginning school. It should be noted that since both summers will be spent completing academic requirements at Kanbar, a summer internship will not be necessary.
Student Life
MBA/MFA students are encouraged to become active in student clubs at both Stern and the Tisch School of the Arts.
