August: Mandatory Pre-Term Orientation
The collaborative community starts with Pre-Term. You'll meet classmates, explore New York and learn about academics, career opportunities and student life at Stern.

Year 1: Flexible Core Curriculum & Block Experience 
Stern's MBA program is 60 credits; more than half are electives. The first year combines core courses, electives and our Career Development Program. No classes are held on Fridays, which are for career programming and student club activities.

Required Core Courses (7.5 credits)

  • Financial Accounting & Reporting (3 credits)
  • Statistics & Data Analysis (3 credits)
  • Teams and Leaders (noncredit)
  • Professional Responsibility (1.5 credits - 2nd year)

Core Course Menu - Choose five to seven (15 - 21 credits)

  • Competitive Advantage from Operations (3 credits)
  • Firms & Markets (3 credits)
  • Foundations of Finance (3 credits)
  • The Global Economy (3 credits)
  • Leadership in Organizations (3 credits)
  • Marketing (3 credits)
  • Strategy (3 credits)


Waiving Core Courses

Students may waive some core courses. Each year, the academic departments determine waiving requirements. These may include majoring in a topic, taking a proficiency exam or having a professional certification such as a CPA. View details on our Academic Advising website. If you waive a class, you must replace it with an elective. 

Block Experience

Each class is divided into 6 blocks of 60-70 students for core courses. Study groups of about 5 students with diverse backgrounds are assigned for group work in core courses. You choose your own study groups for electives. 

Between Year 1 & Year 2: Summer Internship
The summer internship provides industry experience and vital networking connections that help you take your career to the next level. View recent summer internship placement data.

Year 2: Electives & Specializations
In the second year, you can customize the curriculum to meet your specific academic and professional goals.

Commencement

After graduation, you'll pursue your career goals full-time, join an alumni network of more than 75,000 and enjoy ongoing career support from the Career Center for Working Professionals.
