Meet Stern Veterans

Heather Hjelm, Class of 2009
U.S. Army, Captain, Blackhawk Pilot, Training Officer
Camp Zama, Japan

Why I chose to pursue an MBA at Stern: After eight years in the Army, I knew I wanted to be in business and needed a solid foundation to make a successful transition. I wanted to live and work in New York City, and Stern stood out as the only top business school that really leverages the City. Once I visited campus and got to know the students, there was no other choice for me.

My advice to those in the armed forces considering a Stern MBA: Start early! Applying to business school is time consuming. It requires a lot of preparation for everyone, but especially for military applicants. Start thinking about the application process a year and a half in advance. Field exercises and deployments will slow you down.

Tim Fisher, Class of 2010
U.S. Army, Captain, Fire Support Officer
Ft. Stewart, GA

Why I chose to pursue an MBA at Stern:
As an Army officer, I developed a wide, diverse skill set. I wanted to transfer this skill set from a military to a business environment. When I visited the Stern campus, I felt at home and connected with the students. Stern offered a culture of excellence, a community of bright visionaries and an atmosphere in which I could nurture and realize my goals.

My advice to those in the armed forces considering a Stern MBA: Start the process as soon as you can and split the process into two parts. Part 1 consists of studying for and taking the GMAT. Part 2 consists of visiting the campus and writing your application. It's nice to have the GMAT out of the way before you apply. Then, you can focus on writing an application that really conveys your story and why Stern is a good fit for you.
