Application Review Process
To ensure the smooth processing of your application, please:

  • Submit your application prior to or on the deadline.
  • Take the GMAT or GRE and TOEFL (if needed) prior to the deadline, and send us your scores.
  • Make certain your application is complete (see our checklist) upon submission.

Check the Status of Your Application
NYU Stern will automatically send you an email confirmation within three weeks from the day we receive your application. The email confirmation will contain your password to access the Application Status Check Website. The website is available 24 hours a day and indicates the current status of your application. Any additional information submitted may take up to ten business days after we receive it to be reflected on the Application Status Check Website. Please note that application acknowledgments will not be emailed prior to the first deadline.

To protect your privacy, we do not release the status of your application or decisions via email, telephone or fax. You must use the Application Status Check Website.

After reviewing your complete application, the Committee will provide you with an initial notification.

Initial Notification
If your application was completed by the deadline, you will receive an initial notification no later than the initial notification date. You will be emailed when your status has been updated on the Application Status Check Website. We do not release initial notifications via telephone, fax or mail. Initial notification possibilities are as follows:

  • Interview invitation
  • Waitlist offer
  • Denial of admission

The admissions interview plays an important role in ensuring that the Stern community is comprised of exceptional individuals. Therefore, an offer of admission is never made prior to the “interview invitation.”

Interviews

After reviewing your application, the Admissions Committee may request an interview. If the Admissions Committee invites you to interview, you will receive the invitation and scheduling information via email. Interviews are available by invitation only.

Interviews are conducted in person in New York City. If invited to interview, you should plan on traveling to New York City to interview as part of our application process. All applicants invited to interview will be required to bring an official transcript from each school attended to the interview.

The interview provides the Admissions Committee with more information about your professional experience, career goals and personal characteristics. Interviews are typically conducted by our trained admissions professionals, who will have thoroughly read your entire application and will be intimately familiar with your background and goals.

This interview is a great opportunity to make sure Stern is the right fit for you. When interviewing on campus, please use your visit to learn more about Stern by attending a tour and information session, visiting a class and meeting current students, as well as seeing New York City and Greenwich Village.

tipAdmissions Tips:

  • Ideally, your interview will not be the first time you have visited or met us prior to applying. We recommend visiting us in New York or meeting us at one of our fall recruiting sessions across the U.S. and around the world. If this is not possible, it is helpful to utilize our online resources (chats, videos, podcasts, student journals, etc.) and to contact a current student.
  • Since your Stern interviewer will be intimately familiar with your application, you should review your application in detail to help prepare for the interview.
  • Please view our official transcript requirements before scheduling your interview. You will need to bring your official transcript(s) and, possibly, other required materials to your interview.
  • Because NYU Stern follows a rolling notification process, you should request your official transcript(s), translations and/or degree conferral(s) early in the application process, before you are invited to interview.

Off-Site Interviews
If you are invited to interview but are not able to come to Stern, you may consider one of our off-site interview locations. For priority consideration for off-site interviews, apply by November 15. Typically, we conduct off-site interviews in China, India and the United Kingdom, but each year, this is subject to change.

Candidates participating in off-site interviews are not at a disadvantage to those interviewing at Stern. However, if timing is an important consideration, you may be able to interview sooner in New York City.

Alumni/Phone Interview Requests
Alumni or phone interview requests are almost never granted and should be requested only under extreme circumstances. We expect you to interview in person in New York City with the Admissions Committee or at one of our designated off-site interview locations.

Post-Interview Decision
If you receive an interview invitation, it is important to note the amount of time it will take for the Admissions Committee to provide a final decision. Upon receiving the interview invitation, you must first schedule the interview. After the interview, it will typically take up to three weeks to receive a post-interview decision. However, the Admissions Committee will not make a final decision until your official transcript(s) and any other requested materials have been received and verified.

Once the Admissions Committee has issued your decision, you will receive an email indicating your status has changed. You can review your new status on the Application Status Check Website. There are three possible post-interview decisions:

  • Offer of admission
  • Waitlist offer
  • Denial of admission

All decisions of the Admissions Committee are final.

Waitlist
In our admissions process, you may be placed on the waitlist without being interviewed or after being interviewed. If you are placed on the waitlist, you will receive additional information about the waitlist process at that time.

Admission

If offered admission, you will view an online letter of admission on our Application Status Check Website and be mailed a formal letter of admission and other important information. If you have been awarded any scholarships, that information will be part of your mailed letter. In addition, you will be given access to our Admitted Student Website.

Email Contact

We require each applicant to provide an email address because it will be your primary form of communication with Stern MBA Admissions. To protect your privacy, admissions notifications are available only through our password-protected Application Status Check Website.

It is the responsibility of each applicant to update NYU Stern immediately of any changes to his or her contact information. Updates must be made through the Application Status Check website.

NYU Stern is not responsible for any technological issues (including email filters, etc.) that prevent applicants from receiving our communications. Please contact your email provider and/or set your spam filter preferences to ensure you will receive email from all email addresses from stern.nyu.edu.

Incomplete Applications
If your application is not complete (for example, missing test scores, illegible scanned transcript, no essays or other items) you will be informed via email. If you do not provide a completed application by the deadline, we cannot guarantee notification by the initial notification date.

tipAdmissions Tip:

To make sure your application is complete, carefully review the application checklist.
