Other NYU Division Courses
Many Stern students take courses at other NYU graduate schools, selected from the Non-Stern Pre-Approved Course List. After completing the "B01" Stern Core, students may take up to 15 elective credits in other NYU divisions. Core requirements must be completed and may not be taken concurrently. Full-Time students may not take courses in other divisions in their second semester as electives for this reason.
To be eligible to graduate, MBA candidates must complete a minimum of 75% of their program – 45 credits – at Stern.
New York University students may not pursue two degrees simultaneously at different schools of the University, unless accepted and enrolled into one of the established dual degree programs as stated above.
Courses taken on Study Abroad programs are included in the 15 non-Stern credits available to MBA students. Please refer to study abroad policy.
Dual degree students must account for credit reductions when determining how many non-Stern credits can be taken (see Dual Degree Programs for more info)
Grades:
Non-Stern NYU courses that have been approved for the MBA program will be included in the GPA. A student must receive a "B-" or better to receive credit toward the MBA for a non-Stern course. After registering for a non-Stern NYU elective, the course will appear on the Remaining Requirements page under "Courses Not Credited to MBA." After a grade of “B-“ or better has been submitted, the NYU course will be moved under the Elective area.
Specializations:
Non-Stern courses do not count towards specializations with the exception of the Law and Business Specialization.
Credit Equivalency:
The assignment of Stern credits is based on the number of hours the course meets, which varies by school and, sometimes, by course. To count as three Stern credits, a course must meet at least 37 hours. To count as 1.5 Stern credits, a course must meet at least 18 hours.
Registering:
To register for a pre-approved course, please follow these steps:
1) Students will need to confirm their ability to handle the coursework academically
2) Some schools require an approval code to register for their courses. Therefore, students must contact directly the NYU division to confirm availability and for approval code (i.e REI).
3) Fill out the request form and bring in to the appropriate advising office (MBA Academic Affairs, 6-120) for approval. Students do NOT need to include a course description or syllabus if the class is pre-approved.
4) The advising office will review, process and forward the form to the Office of Records & Registration for enrollment. Students will need to the availability in the class directly with the NYU division or school.
A complete list of courses with their time and location can be found in the NYU Directory of Classes. Students can review NYU directory online. For a list of Law School classes, please go to www.law.nyu.edu.
Important Guidelines:
- Seats in courses at other NYU divisions are not guaranteed.
- Students pay tuition for these courses through Stern according to their Stern credit equivalence.
- All students registering for courses at the School of Law that are not pre-approved must fill out the following form and take it to the School of Law and MBA Academic Advising for faculty and administrative signatures.
- Please note, it is the student's responsibility to be aware of the add/drop dates and deadlines for any approved courses taken outside of the Stern School of Business. Students must visit the Stern Office of Records and Registration to drop a course at another NYU division.
Petitioning for Courses that Do Not Appear on the Pre-Approved List:
Non-Stern courses must be at the Masters degree level, must address a business or management subjects that are not covered in Stern electives, and must fit clearly into the student’s MBA program. Most computer and math courses do not qualify. Language and undergraduate courses never qualify. It is the student's responsibility to verify course expectations directly with the NYU division or school. Students should confirm their ability to handle the coursework before submitting their request.
Students may petition for approval of a course that does not appear on the pre-approved list by following these steps:
1) Complete this request form.
2) Bring or fax it to the MBA Academic Advising Office (KMC 6-120) at least two weeks prior to the first class meeting. (Petitions submitted any later will not be reviewed.)
The following information must be included in the petition:
1) course description
2) syllabus
3) a detailed explanation of how the course will enhance or complement the student's program.
Petitions will be reviewed by the appropriate advisors and Stern faculty. When submitting a petition, please keep in mind that Stern faculty has already reviewed and approved courses they feel are appropriate choices for Stern MBA students and have included them in the Non-Stern Pre-Approved Course list.
