Free Course

Students in their last semester of study will be permitted to take up to 3 extra credits free of charge beyond the 60 credits required to complete the MBA program.

Students will be permitted to register for this extra class in the drop/add period after the lottery has been run for the next semester. Notification will be sent announcing the specific date in which students may add the free course (approximately two weeks following the lottery results).  This ensures that students taking a free extra class/credits are not closing other students out of courses that they need.

Procedure

Students who want to take advantage of the free extra course must register for the additional course in the drop/add period.  The designated “free” course will not be given consideration during lottery and will be filled on a space available basis only after the lottery has been run.

Full-Time: Download the “credit overload form” and submit it to the MBA Academic Advising Office (KMC 6-120).  The student should submit the form and the course will be added for the student.

Part-Time: Download the “free credit form” and submit it to the Langone Program Office (KMC 6-120).  The student should add the class on or after the designated date (see above) and then submit the form.

Grades

  • Classes are taken for a letter grade and will figure into their GPA.
  • Auditing is not permitted.
  • All grading policies and deadlines apply including drop and withdrawal.

Semester

  • The free course is only applicable in the last semester of study for up to three credits above the 60 required for the MBA.
  • Overloads taken in previous semesters do not apply.

Course Load

Students must adhere to the published credit maximums.  Full-Time students should register for 12-15 credits each semester.  Part-Time students may register for a maximum of 9 credits each semester, including the semester with the free course.  Students may not exceed the 9 credit maximum per semester in order to take the free course.

Courses

Stern courses, Study Abroad credits, and Pre-Approved Non-Stern (other NYU Division) courses may be used for the free credit offering. All program requirements must be met without using free credits (i.e. the free credit course may not be used to fulfill a Core requirement).

Bursar

Full-time students pay a flat fee for tuition.

Part-time students will register for the course and have the tuition for those credits on their record until the end of the semester when the Bursar will cancel the tuition.  Part-time students should be advised not to pay for those credits.

Financial Aid

This free class cannot advance credit standing necessary for financial aid. For instance, if a part-time student needs 4.5 credits to graduate, i.e. to complete the 60-credit program, and a 1.5 or 3 credit free class is taken, this student does NOT qualify for Federal Stafford loans (nor certain private loans) in their last semester of study.

Advising

Full-time: credit overloads are approved per their existing policies. All considerations for exceeding credit load maximums must be given (i.e. student’s professional or academic workload and the ability to perform successfully with the additional course load.)

Part-time: Accelerations are not granted.  Taking advantage of the free course is not a reason to grant an acceleration.
